Boss Owen Coyle has decided to take the Clarets away from the glare of publicity ahead of the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday week, a game dubbed as the richest in world football because of the glittering prize of a place in the Premier League.
And from Sunday, they will spend four days in the state-of-art Vale do Lobo complex on the Algarve, a facility used by top sporting teams including Liverpool and the England cricket team, as they build up to the Bank Holiday blockbuster at Wembley.
It is a move welcomed by Tuesday night goal hero Thompson, who has been to the resort before when a Cardiff City player - and insists it will help the squad.
“It’s a very good set up,” said the Scotsman. “I was there with Cardiff in the pre-season last summer.
“They have a really good football training pitch which we will be training on every day, and there is nice golf courses so we might be able to do that in the afternoon.”
Ever since the Clarets beat Reading on Tuesday night to book their place in the 90-minute shoot-out for the Premier League with Sheffield United, the Clarets have been at the centre of a media circus with a mood of euphoria across the town.
Massive queues formed outside Turf Moor yesterday as tickets for the Wembley showdown went on sale and Thompson added: “I think it’s just a getaway from the madness that is here.
“We have earned it with the length of the season and amount of games we have played.
“But we are not going over there to sit on our bums, we are going over there to train every day.
“It’s basically just to get everyone together and get away ahead of the big game.”
The resort claims to offer the most extensive range of sporting facilities in the Algarve and the two golf course have played host to the Portuguese Open. Green fees for visitors start at €155 a round.
And properties are advertised on the resort’s web site for €3.7m.
