If your idea of a perfect break is teeing off on some of the best golf courses in Europe with the sun shining down on you, then booking villa holidays in Portugal could be the best choice. With more than 30 courses to choose from in the Algarve region of Portugal, golfing fans are guaranteed to find one that they love spending all their days on. The central part of the Algarve region has the highest number of golf courses for you to explore so if you want to tee off on as many as possible, looking for villa rentals in this part of Portugal could be a good move. Alternatively, if you want to pay a visit to the home of golfing in the Algarve then you should consider staying in the west, which is home to the Penina golf course. Designed in the 1960s by Henry Cotton, it was the first grass course to be created in this Portuguese region. The 18-hole course is largely flat but features a number of water hazards that often catch out long-hitters who throw caution to the wind and is described as "challenging" and "especially for the strong player". If you are new to golf but fancy having a go at the sport while staying in villas in Portugal then you are best advised to head to a course such as Balaia, which is ideal for beginners. This nine-hole green is the ideal spot to practice both iron shots and putting, with something to appeal to more experienced golfers as well as those just starting out. Balaia also boasts beautiful views for you to enjoy as you stroll between holes, with the blue seas providing the perfect backdrop to the well-kept greens of the course. If you fancy a break from the golf course during your stay in a villa in Portugal then you will find plenty of other attractions dotted along the Algarve's picturesque coastline. As well as its white sand beaches and crystal clear seas, there are also historic towns each with their own charm just waiting to be discovered. Visit the old castle at Albufeira or the cathedral in Faro for your fix of culture and history. Meanwhile, you can try your hand at water sports such as surfing or water skiing. The beaches at Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago are among the best in the region for the latter sport, while Lagos is a good starting point for anyone keen to learn to surf.
