dancing and wine on Sunday at the Kalari Cellar Door to a very appreciative crowd. The Portuguese group’s performance was the third opportunity Cowra people had to experience the folk culture of the guest nation Portugal at Cowra’s 2009 Festival of International Understanding.
The performer’s ages ranged from 4yr old toddlers in full ethnic costume to older performers who performed some very exciting dances.
Their performance showed the culture, traditions, sounds and movement from an era where work, social life, play and romance were integrated into song and dance.
Assim é Portugal performers were dressed in various costumes, each representing different regions of Portugal. From North to South, each costume had its own meaning; either simple, practical and cheap for the land workers or expensive cloth garments adorned with gold, silver and jewels demonstrating the valour of the rich families.
Together the dancers combined to celebrate Portuguese Culture, and a history they are proud to promote and maintain.
As a bonus the group presented a range of traditional Portuguese cakes and sweet treats which tempted this audience.
Also on display at Kalari was a special art exhibition named Curios of Portugal. It was a collection of works from regional artists celebrating the colour and diversity of Portugal.
